‘The Prime of Miss Brodie’ by Muriel Spark

Probably the best known work by Muriel Spark, «The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie» (1961) is a masterful short novel filled with irony, wit, and ethical explorations. Set in the 1930s in Edinburgh, the story deals with the coming-of-age of a group of girls under the influence of Miss Brodie, a boastful teacher navigating the aftermath of World War I and its contradictions.

Muriel Spark (1918-2006) was a Scottish novelist. She was born in Edinburgh, where she attended the James Gillespie’s School for Girls, the place that inspired the fictional school in «The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie». After her marriage in 1937, she lived in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). She returned to Britain in 1944, where she worked in Intelligence for the remainder of World War II. After living in New York City for some years, she moved to Rome. She finally settled in Tuscany, in the village of Civitella della Chiana, of which in 2005 Spark was made an honorary citizen.

She was quite prolific, writing over 20 novels and several other books. Her style has been praised by critics for its conciseness and humor.
